In Cincinnati's first 2015 preseason game on Aug. 14, middle linebacker Nico Johnson made nine tackles in the Bengals' 23 10 victory over the New York Giants. He tops the team with 15 tackles through three preseason games. But on Monday, Johnson was one of the 274 players on the wrong side of the NFL's transactions as Cincinnati waived the former Andalusia High School and Alabama Crimson Tide standout.
The list includes three former Alabama players, one ex Auburn player and eight others with their football roots in the state. CDT Tuesday to cut their preseason rosters, which have been at a maximum of 90 players, to 75 players. Saturday, each NFL team must be at its regular season roster maximum of wholesale jerseys 53 players.
Former Alabama guard Leon Brown was waived by the Baltimore Ravens, and former Auburn cornerback Jonathon Mincy was waived by the Atlanta Falcons. They were trying to land roster spots as undrafted rookies.
Also let go on Monday were offensive tackle Terren Jones (Alabama State) and cornerback Ellis Lankster (Vigor) by the Buffalo Bills and place kicker Ty Long (UAB) by the Washington Redskins. Jones appeared in one NFL game last season, Lankster is a five year veteran and Long is an undrafted rookie.
Transactions first reported on Sunday also were included on Monday's list, including the release of cornerback Javier Arenas (Alabama) by the New York Jets, wide receiver Greg Jenkins (Alabama State) by the Jacksonville Jaguars and defensive tackle Jeremy Towns (Wenonah, Samford) by the Philadelphia Eagles. Jenkins was waived with an injured designation, which means if he clears waivers, the Jaguars can put him on the injured reserve list or offer him an injury settlement.

The trade that sent wide receiver Kevin Norwood (Alabama) from the Seattle Seahawks to the Carolina Panthers also didn't make the NFL's Monday transactions list. Norwood needs to pass the Panthers' physical for the trade to become official.
Reports indicate the Seahawks received a conditional seventh round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft in exchange for Norwood. The wide receiver has to play for the Panthers this season for Seattle to receiver the draft choice. Also on Monday, the Washington Redskins placed outside linebacker Junior Galette (Stillman) on injured reserve after he tore an Achilles tendon at practice last week. He will miss the 2015 season.
